Deepstep is in the heart of kaolin mining country and was founded in 1901. Some of the county's closest and longest standing family ties come from Deepstep, with families who have lived there for generations. There is debate on how Deepstep got its name, one argument being that it was named after Deepstep Creek and the other being that it came from a Native American after his foot sunk into the clay. One thing is for sure, "Roots run deep in Deepstep".
