Warthen was the first settlement established in Washington County and was founded to be the site of the superior courts and the jail for the county, until the seat was transferred to Sandersville in 1794. Warthen has been around for such a long time that it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is known for being home to Georgia's oldest jail.

​Georgia's Oldest Jail: Warthen's most recognizable landmark. Built in 1786, this historical structure has withstood the test of time. In 1804, Aaron Burr, third vice president of the United States was held there while on his way to Richmond for trial.

​Hamburg State Park: Less than a 10 minute drive from Warthen. the 741 acre park is the perfect place to picnic, camp, fish, boat, hike, and enjoy nature. The park is home to a 1920's era grist mill and agriculture museum. Hamburg State Park is home to abundant wildlife and is the perfect spot to unwind and relax.
